Frequently asked
- Can I archive someone else’s repository?
- Yes. Anyone may archive any eligible public GitHub repository — maintainer approval is not required. Unclaimed entries are clearly labeled “Community archived” and never imply the project endorses Commit Archive. Maintainers can claim, correct, or remove their entry at any time.
- Does the maintainer need to approve it?
- No. The archive records already-public information. Maintainers get a fast claim-and-verify path (and an equally fast removal path) if they want control of their entry.
- What if the repository is already archived this year?
- There’s exactly one archive entry per repository per edition. If it already exists, you won’t be charged — we show you the existing entry instead.
- Does the page update during the year?
- Yes. Entries refresh on a regular cadence all year. When the edition closes, every entry is frozen into a permanent, immutable snapshot.
- How can maintainers claim or remove an entry?
- Sign in with GitHub to verify control of the repository, or use the report link on any archive page. Verified maintainer removals are fast-tracked.
- How can contributors opt out?
- Contributors with a linked GitHub account can opt out instantly — sign in with GitHub under Contributor settings and every public mention of you is removed and stays removed, across all entries and future editions. Contributors without a linkable GitHub account have a manual privacy-removal path.
- Is Commit Archive affiliated with GitHub?
- No. Commit Archive is an independent service that reads public data from the GitHub API. GitHub is a trademark of GitHub, Inc.
- What does the $3.99 buy?
- A permanent public archive page for the repository’s year: statistics, timeline, contributor yearbook cards, superlatives, social images, and a README badge — kept refreshed until the edition freezes, then preserved.
- Are award votes paid?
- Never. Commit Archive Awards voting is free, requires a GitHub account, and votes cannot be bought — archiving is paid, recognition is not.
